Following our 2019 update on the different problems that foreigners face when trying to open bank accounts in Bulgaria, things haven’t got much easier. The banks in Bulgaria don’t seem to be getting much joy from their foreign clients. Unless of course the bank can be 100% certain that the client has “serious intentions”…
In the good old days, usually it was the young girls who were expecting “serious intentions” before they would get their feet wet in a relationship. Now it seems the banks are playing timid and “hard to get”. But are they?
Not really, it’s more like that the banks are being scared from the over-regulated legal environment. The banks need to comply with so many regulations – anti money laundering, KYC, anti tax avoidance measures, etc. that they simply prefer saying “NO!”. Rather than risking to face the eventual “consequences”.
Believe it or not, but it is now you who has to gain the confidence of the bank. You have to be polite and presentable, the very least. You will have to prove that you will never cause any headache, no matter what. Now the bank is choosing you, not the other way around.
You will have to justify why do you want to open bank account in another country (Bulgaria). Because think about it – the bank won’t pay you virtually any interest on your hard earned money and may even charge you a negative one. They will charge you hefty maintenance fees and you will be still willing to open a bank account? You better find a good reason for this madness…
